Hardcover VS. Paperback: What’s the difference?

hardcover vs paperback picture

When you come to my house you will see bookshelves filled with books I have hardcover books with pretty designs on their edges, and I have paperbacks that I take everywhere that have been through the ringer. What’s the difference? And why should You care? Hardcover Vs. Paperback the question of the century, not an easy battle let’s get into it and see where you stand in the end.

Hardcovers: The Pretty Boys of My Shelves

wind and truth hardcover

Hardcover books are the books I buy for the aesthetics of my shelves and for longevity. If I get a book signed by the author I try to get them to sign my hardcover copies, because I know they will last for decades. Hardcovers are the prettier siblings to any paperback with their shiny dust covers and sprayed edges. Where Hardcovers shine in aesthetics and longevity, they fall short in practicality, carrying more than one feels like weightlifting, so travelling with a couple of them turns into quite the ordeal. If you have a table to rest the book on it’s no problem but try to read a hardcover copy of “Wind and Truth” by Brandon Sanderson in bed at your own risk (I tried, and my nose will never forget that impact). I will always love my hardcovers and the arm strength they’ve given me.

Pros

  • Lasts for decades
  • Gorgeous on shelves
  • Great for signed/collector’s editions

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Heavy and bulky
  • Awkward in bed or on the go
  • Dust jackets can wear easily

Paperbacks: My Well Worn Friends

fablehaven paperback

I have a paperback copy of “Fablehaven” by Brandon Mull that has been with me through thick and thin, and my daughter also loves it (it shows). Paperback books are meant to be read in any situation; I always have one close at hand. The most affordable reading option, especially the mass production copies. A paperback book may not be prettiest or last the longest, but they feel right in my hands.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Light and portable
  • Easy to read anywhere
  • Flexible, no dust jacket fuss

Cons

  • Wear out faster
  • Less collectible
  • Pages bend/tear easily
  • Don’t stand out on shelves

Final Thoughts

Are you Team Hardcover or Team Paperback? For me, I am definitely playing both teams and my shelves are filled with both. I have to assess which option best fits each book (when I don’t just get one of each). Whatever choice you make is the right choice. Let me know in the comments which you are reaching for on your next purchase.
